'A Whole Lot Of Awesome' Digest: March 2013

I know it's a bit late (I've taken some time off from my business lately), but here's a bunch of stuff I posted and collected for the month of February.

  • What am I working on these days? As I mentioned last month, I'm currently working on developing a single, unified approach to sharing the maps, tools, and other products I create. There's a lot of experimenting and trial and error that goes into this process for me (it's a bit slow going), but my vision for what I have in mind is getting clearer each day, and I believe that I'm close to having something nailed down. You know me, when I have something to share, you'll see it here! :-)

A Simple Trick To Ignite Positive Energy And Motivation

I'd like to share with you a couple of my favorite vacation photos (there's a reason I'm doing this, so stick with me)...

This first image was taken on a train as me and my wife Kathy traveled through Switzerland in 2011:

The next image was taken while we were visiting the Grand Canyon, also in 2011 (I'll tell you about the dog in a moment)

Anyone who knows me, knows that I LOVE taking pictures like these. WHY?

Because I know I'm capturing good, positive memories that I can use as a 'force for good' later on.

What do I mean?

Well, I've found that when I want some extra motivation, or when I just want to feel great, there are few things that help me to get there better or faster than a review of some of the photos I've taken though the years.

A great photo, or even a handful of photos (print or digital) can instantly take my mind and emotions to a point in my life when I was caught in a moment of awesomeness - and I get to relive it!

I nearly always come away with almost as much satisfaction and gratitude about the experience as I had when I originally lived it.

Talk about a valuable, worthy, and positive use of time.

Think about it... when you take pictures, aren't you really trying to capture a memory, and all the colors, objects, people, and feelings that were part of it?

What good are those captured memories if all you do is post them online and forget about them?

Instead, make good use of them to ignite in you a force for good (good feelings, thoughts, and actions).

Here are some simple suggestions for using your photos in this way:

  • Remember the Journey - Think about the drive from one place to the next, or the places you visited - why you went there, how they looked, what you saw when you got there. The more details you remember, the better!
  • Remember the Stories - Recall any interesting or enjoyable moments you experienced along the way. For example, in the second photo above, the dog actually belonged to the strangers we asked to take the picture. He was friendly, and we thought it would be cool to include him in our photo, so we asked his owners, they took the picture, and we had a short, but enjoyable conversation with them afterward.
  • Remember the Feelings - Feel the feelings you were experiencing (happiness, excitement, calm, peace, contentment, etc.) as strong as you possibly can.

When's a good time to do this?

  • For Entertainment - Turn off the TV and entertain yourself for 20-30 minutes by reliving one of your vacations instead.
  • As A Constant Reminder Of The Awesomeness In Your Life - Every day, pick a single photo and spend a few minutes trying to recall all the thoughts and feelings surrounding the memory captured in it.
  • For Motivation And Positive Energy - We all have moments when we're down or feeling unmotivated...this is a great time relive a positive memory in order to change your state from one of weakness and negativity to one of power and positivity!

5 Minute Walks...Little Effort - BIG Results!

It's one of the most basic skills in life - so basic and so ordinary that it's easy to overlook it for more than what it seems to be...a simple way to get around your world.

But, I've recently discovered it's more than that, and I'd like to share with you some of the effects that it has had on me and my life.

I have a moderately active life and very good health. Despite that, I sit a lot, and felt I needed a little something extra in my daily routine to ensure that my clear thinking and good health continue as long as possible.

I wanted to intentionally add some sort of physical activity that:

  • Was simple to do
  • Could be done anytime
  • Didn't require equipment or expense

Walking seemed to be the obvious choice.

Now, at first glance, most people might think, 'Walking?!? That's so basic, what I'm going to do to add more activity to my life is spend an hour in the gym 5 days a week!'

That's a nice goal to shoot for...eventually. But it's that kind of thinking that prevents people from making long-term positive changes - they try to make a drastic change in their life all at once (like expecting to go from zero activity to fitness fanatic in a week), only to find out that the drastic change approach works for about 3-4 days, before they give up and go back to their old ways again.

What a waste of time!

I'm a HUGE believer in the power and success of making small changes over time. 

Why? Because small changes are believable, sustainable, and they can be increased slowly over time - if you stick with them.

Small changes, done consistently, create HUGE differences!

With that in mind, I started to walk (with intensity and speed) every day (I wanted to get my heart-rate up).

Here was my simple plan:

  • Days 1-3: Walk with intensity and speed for 1 minute
  • Days 3-7: Walk with intensity and speed for 3 minutes
  • Days 8-14: Walk with intensity and speed for 5 minutes
  • Days 15+: Gradually add more time, and more hills, stairs, and other challenges

NOTE: The key is to walk with intensity and speed, just in case you missed that. :-)

It may not seem like much (especially the seemingly 'ridiculous' 1 minute a day approach), but I've stuck with it, and I'm happy to report the following (noticeable) benefits after reaching 5 minutes a day:  

  • Clarity - Thinking, decision-making, problem-solving, and creativity have ALL improved 
  • Positivity - I feel better, happier, and more confident 
  • Action - Even though I'm a very disciplined person when it comes to taking action, the increase in energy that I have has had a dramatic effect on my ability to produce - more energy = more doing!

In a nutshell: I knew that this simple change would have a positive impact, I just didn't anticipate it being so noticeable, so quickly - which is awesome!

Not only that, but while you walk, you're involved in an activity that's so automatic that you can easily spend the time thinking, appreciating, or affirming - think of these as bonuses!

In closing, I'd like to recommend you try this yourself!

It's simple, doable, fun, and it's a small change that you can make that could lead to BIG, positive effects in your thinking, emotions, and ability to get things done!

1 Idea x 30 Days x Life = Mind-blowing Results

Below is a video I recently stumbled across a by a well-known Googler named Matt Cutts.

In the video, Matt discusses a simple method he uses to implement positive changes in his life.

So, what do you think of this idea for making sustainable changes in life?

I think it's awesome!

The simplicity of it is genius...

Instead of spending time, week after week, month after month, simple reading a collecting ideas and strategies that you'll use 'someday' (if ever), why not use Matt's approach to improving your life instead:

  • Pick a positive mindset, idea, or habit you want to implement - From not eating sugar, to using peoples names, or even writing down something you're grateful for every day (the list is endless really - just think of a small change that could have a positive impact on your life if you did it for 30 days)  
  • Spend the next 30 days focused and committed to doing it - On an index card, write down a short summary of your challenge and review it every day. Focus on completing only one challenge a month, and don't go to bed until you've completed it every day! 
  • At the end of 30 days, do it again - Come up with a different challange, and begin the process of change all over again.

Just imagine: If you repeat this process every month, and you stick to it, in 5 years you will have completed 60 challenges!

Do you think you'd be in a different/better place after implementing 60 positive changes?

I'd say...mind-blowing! :-)

Eliminate One Of The Biggest Obstacles To Taking Action!

Want to take more action and get more done?

Of course you do! ;)

Here's a simple principle to remember and put into practice:

The more clear you are about what you need to do, especially the very next action, the more likely you will do it.

Lack of clarity (not really knowing what to do next) creates resistance to taking action, which can often be strong enough to prevent you from acting altogether.

You've likely experienced this many times in you're life when you knew you needed to take action on something, but you weren't really clear about what the action needed to be, so you put it off... again, again, and again. 

The reason for the resistance and putting off is related to 'fear of the unknown' - your brain resists doing anything when it's not clear about what needs done or the result that will come from doing.

It really is that simple!

It a nutshell: The clearer your outcomes (big and small) and the clearer you are about the steps for achieving them, the greater motivation you (and your brain) will have for taking action!

So what are some ways to get clear about what you need to do?

You know what they are, but maybe you never understood how and why they worked, and why they're essential if you want to get things done in life!

  • Get crystal clear about your outcomes - When you have a project or goal you want to achieve, write down WHY you want to achieve it and what it looks like (include details, but keep it simple).  
  • Get crystal clear about action steps - Brainstorm for 3-5 minutes to create a simple list of action steps that need to be completed to finish the project or achieve the goal. Include as much detail with each action step as possible ('Brainstorm 10-15 attention-grabbing titles for my book that highlight a benefit the reader will get from reading it')

Now, you're ready to do it!

NOTE: Use this simple approach for any project or goal that involves more that 3 steps to complete or achieve - you'll be amazed at your increased level of action. The key is to keep it simple, even if that means scratching out ideas and steps on an index card that you'll later throw away.

In addition to getting clear about specific projects and goals, you want to develop the mindset of a clear thinker, you do this by adopting habits that promote it:

  • Review - Regularly review information (tips, strategies, ideas) that have value to you and what you do in your life and business
  • Plan and prepare - Learn to plan and prepare (create a budget) - be proactive in life, not reactive
  • Pay attention - Pay attention to what you eat, how and where you spend your time, and how and where you spend your money
  • Give value to what's small - Pay attention to details in life - the little words, actions, feelings, sensations, and other things that often get dismissed as being unimportant

Clear outcomes, clear action steps, and clear thinking WILL help you get things done!

Creating A Super-System For Getting Things Done

Most of us have tasks in our life that we do repeatedly. Tasks like:

  • Paying our bills
  • Writing a blog post
  • Setting goals for the year
  • Starting a new project in our business
  • And so on...

For these kinds of tasks, I've always recommended spending a little time creating and documenting (getting it on paper or in a digital document) a simple step-by-step process/system that can be reviewed each time the task needs done again, so it can be completed efficiently and effectively.

When you break it down, to complete a task, you really only need two basic elements:

  • A Process - A system for completing the task (think: Step 1, Step 2, and so on)
  • Knowledge - Tips, strategies, and resources that are relevant and useful while you're completing the task 


 The Super System For the longest time, I used to separate the two - I had one place where I documented my step-by-step process, and another place where I collected tips and strategies related to it.

For example: When it came to setting goals, I had one place where I wrote down the steps for doing it, and another place where I kept tips and strategies related to goal-setting.

Then I had a 'genius' revelation (more like a Duh! moment), and realized that the best time to tap into the knowledge, tips, and strategies I had collected about goal setting was when I was actually going through my goal-setting process!

Makes sense, right?!?

Thus, the 'super-system' concept was born.

Here's how it works, and how to create your own...

  1. Create a new document - Either a Word document, Google Document, or mind map
  2. Set up the super-system framework - Include these sections:
    1. Title - Give the document a heading (such as Goal Setting).
    2. Resources - Set up an area for including a bulleted list of resources (sites, books, people, files on your computer, etc) that are available to you for completing the task. 
    3. The steps - Set up an area of the document for the individual steps needed to complete the task. With each step, you'll include any tips or strategies related to that step, directly near the instructions of the step, so you can reference them at the exact time they're needed.
  3. Build your initial super-system - Fill in the areas of the document as needed with everything you have and know right now.
  4. Maintain, grow, and improve your system - As you go through life and you discover new resources, ideas, tips, strategies, or graphics related the task, update your super-system document with that knowledge accordingly. This means that instead of pointlessly collecting, clipping, and bookmarking information all over the place, gather with a purpose, and place these items into something useful - your super-system document!

Create as many super-systems as you want or need. Remember, they're perfect for any kind of repeatable task you need to perform, from exercising, to planning meals for the week, to creating a presentation, and more!

The 3-Step Guide To Keeping Your Resolutions

The key to changing any behavior begins with understanding and believing one simple truth:

What you value determines what you do.

This can be followed by a supporting truth that says:

When you change what you value, you'll change what you do.

In other words, if you want to adopt a new behavior of any kind, the only way you'll do it and make it stick over the long-term is if you learn to give it massive value.

Giving something value is like magnetizing it - it creates a powerful force that pulls you in its direction and influences your 'internal compass', which you use to determine what decisions to make or actions to take at any given moment.

Unfortunately, for most people, the idea of making change goes no further than making a statement like, 'Starting Monday, I'm going to start eating healthier.' 

They believe that, all of a sudden, now that they've stated their positive intention, that they'll be able to change their deep-rooted, decades-old behavior of eating unhealthy.

It's not going to happen!

Intentions are nice, but they do very little to change what you REALLY value. As a result, they do very little to contribute to long-term change.

Remember...

When you change what you value, you'll change what you do.

So, how do you change what you value? How do you make the idea of eating healthy (or whatever it is you want to do) valuable to you, so that it affects your thinking and actions?

Value is created through clarity, emotion, and repetition.

  • Clarity - You have to see the vision of your new behavior with crystal clarity - details, specifics, the effects it will have in your life
  • Emotion - When you think of your new behavior, you have to feel strong emotions - the emotions you would feel from acheiving it
  • Repetition - You have to connect with your clear vision and those strong emotions, daily!

In practice, this means: 

  1. Get Clear - Write down your intention (goal). Include as many details and specifics about what that goal looks like, and what it will mean. Talk about your goal to others, read books about it, write down tips you learn in a notebook - make it as real to you as possible.
  2. Get Emotional - Find big, bright, colorful, inspirational and motivating pictures of your goal or intention and put them somewhere you can easily review them. When possible, find related inspirational videos as well!
  3. Repeat - Every day, review your detailed, written goal - get clear about what it looks like again, and again, and again. Look at your pictures and/or video and allow strong, positive emotions build inside of you. Feel the sense of success in acheiving it.

This process (done daily and consistently) will cause you to begin to value the goal you want to acheive at a level that it will begin changing your thinking and actions.

This time of year, you may read many different strategies for keeping resolutions and making long-term changes, but please take this advice...

Don't get lost in the clutter!

Just remember these 3 truths:

  • What you value determines what you do.
  • When you change what you value, you'll change what you do.
  • Value is created through clarity, emotion, and repetition.
