'A Whole Lot Of Awesome' Digest: March 2013

I know it's a bit late (I've taken some time off from my business lately), but here's a bunch of stuff I posted and collected for the month of February.

  • What am I working on these days? As I mentioned last month, I'm currently working on developing a single, unified approach to sharing the maps, tools, and other products I create. There's a lot of experimenting and trial and error that goes into this process for me (it's a bit slow going), but my vision for what I have in mind is getting clearer each day, and I believe that I'm close to having something nailed down. 'A Whole Lot Of Awesome' Digest: February 2013

Creating A Super-System For Getting Things Done

Most of us have tasks in our life that we do repeatedly. Tasks like:

  • Paying our bills
  • Writing a blog post
  • Setting goals for the year
  • Starting a new project in our business
  • And so on...

For these kinds of tasks, I've always recommended spending a little time creating and documenting (getting it on paper or in a digital document) a simple step-by-step process/system that can be reviewed each time the task needs done again, so it can be completed efficiently and effectively.

When you break it down, to complete a task, you really only need two basic elements:

  • A Process - A system for completing the task (think: Step 1, Step 2, and so on)
  • Knowledge - Tips, strategies, and resources that are relevant and useful while you're completing the task 


 The Super System For the longest time, I used to separate the two - I had one place where I documented my step-by-step process, and another place where I collected tips and strategies related to it.

For example: When it came to setting goals, I had one place where I wrote down the steps for doing it, and another place where I kept tips and strategies related to goal-setting.

Then I had a 'genius' revelation (more like a Duh! moment), and realized that the best time to tap into the knowledge, tips, and strategies I had collected about goal setting was when I was actually going through my goal-setting process!

Makes sense, right?!?

Thus, the 'super-system' concept was born.

Here's how it works, and how to create your own...

  1. Create a new document - Either a Word document, Google Document, or mind map
  2. Set up the super-system framework - Include these sections:
    1. Title - Give the document a heading (such as Goal Setting).
    2. Resources - Set up an area for including a bulleted list of resources (sites, books, people, files on your computer, etc) that are available to you for completing the task. 
    3. The steps - Set up an area of the document for the individual steps needed to complete the task. With each step, you'll include any tips or strategies related to that step, directly near the instructions of the step, so you can reference them at the exact time they're needed.
  3. Build your initial super-system - Fill in the areas of the document as needed with everything you have and know right now.
  4. Maintain, grow, and improve your system - As you go through life and you discover new resources, ideas, tips, strategies, or graphics related the task, update your super-system document with that knowledge accordingly. This means that instead of pointlessly collecting, clipping, and bookmarking information all over the place, gather with a purpose, and place these items into something useful - your super-system document!

Create as many super-systems as you want or need. Remember, they're perfect for any kind of repeatable task you need to perform, from exercising, to planning meals for the week, to creating a presentation, and more!

Some New Stuff, Some Free Stuff - All Good Stuff!

It's been a bit quiet around here the last couple months, and I'd like to take this post to explain a bit about what's happening, what's going to happen, as well as give you FREE stuff as a way of saying 'thanks for stopping by, and for another great year!'

As you can see, this site been totally redesigned. It's now cleaner, more simple, easier to navigate, and has a better search functionality. The Action Machine home page has been redesigned...actually, more like remodeled a bit. The new site is more simple, clear, and loads much faster. I'm really proud of the copywriting and flow of the sales page. I expect the new site to be a lot more effective in turning visitors into customers. When I launched this site back in August, I was really excited about the potential of the idea/product - powerful success principles delivered in a visual way. I still am (in a major way) excited about it, but the response and feedback I've received has helped me see that despite the newness of it all, some major changes are in order if it's going to be a success.

Here's what I've learned...

First, the 400+ ideas I have for maps needed to be organized in a way that gives them more structure and context with one another. Initially, I wanted each map to contain an idea that could stand on its own. I know that that something else is needed.

With this in mind, I went back to my PushMaps mind map (which holds these 400+ ideas) and completely reorganized everything into 20 categories. This will allow me to create and offer groups of maps that tie together in some way to explain and help users implement a specific idea or success principle, such as learning/growing, taking action, connection with others, using systems, and so on.

Next, I need to find a better delivery/marketing approach - I don't think a separate blog is going to work as well as I had hoped. Not only that, but maintaining 2 blogs, 2 Twitter accounts, 2 Google+ accounts just isn't going to work.

I'm considering reworking the PushMaps.com site a bit so that it's less about the individual posts (like a blog), and more like a showcase or catalog for the maps.

Along those lines, I'm thinking about giving away most of the maps I create (so I can get them into as many peoples' hands as possible), and generate revenue from the product via 'premium' maps.

I've gotta say, while I've created and successfully marketed a number of products over the years, what to do with the PushMaps idea has got me in a bit of a dilemma as to how to move forward - but I feel like I AM getting closer to a solution. :)

Once again, I'm open to your ideas, if you care to share them below. :)

With an updated approach to the whole PushMaps idea (remember, I reorganized my 400+ ideas into 20 categories), I'm left with a few dozen maps that I've already created that don't totally fit into the new plan, so I've decided to begin giving them away by posting them on this blog.

I launched this product on my blog a few months ago, but it has yet to get its own official site (like I said, it's been a busy few months). That will be changing soon, as I plan on making this a flagship product of mine. Why? Because not only do I know how effectively awesome it is at helping me manage my life, but the feedback and response I've received from other users has been phenomenal! 

One of the key elements of this product is that it's built around the concept of mind mapping. When I originally thought about marketing it, I felt it was necessary to convince people of the benefits of mind mapping, then show them how my system used mind mapping to help them effectively manage their life.

My new approach: Focus on reaching existing mind mapping users, and show them how they can use their existing mind mapping tools and skills to manage their life with my system. It's a smaller market, but a more focused and (likely) responsive market.

Think of The Action Map System as a 'life-management/productivity system for current mind mappers. 

Look for the new site to launch soon. Affiliates will be welcome, and I'll pay at least my standard 60% commission.

I continue to love this system because it always delivers results - I am VERY proud of it, and love how great it works!

But, as with most things, this is room for improvement, and the Day Launcher System is no different.

One of the things I've learned (from my own experience, as well as user feedback) since releasing the product nearly 2 years ago is that it needs to be simplified.

You'll be glad to know that I'm on it! :)

I've been working on an updated process that contains most of the elements of the current system, but way more simple and flexible.

One of the biggest changes you'll see is that I'll be providing more ready-to-go tools for making the system work. For example, I found that one of the main obstacles that many users face with the current system is coming up with their own ideas for things like vision statements. With the updated system, I'll be giving you plenty of starter ideas for making something like this much easier to do.

In addition, since the idea behind my PushMaps idea is to share ideas, strategies, and principles that help you change and grow for the better, look for integration between the two products eventually - it's going to be incredible!

In a nutshell, look for the updated system to be:

  • More simple and quicker to go through
  • Easy to implement with ready-to-go tools
  • Integrated with some of my other products/tools

This is a very unique product I released a few years ago that's a combination of a copywriting how-to guide and a mind map.

Despite all the hard work I put into creating it, for various reasons, I did very little to market it - actually nothing at all, except a blog post. As a result, it never really 'took off' to a level I think it still could, given the right attention and nurturing.

With everything else I have going on at the moment, I've decided that I'm going to simply sell the product, domain, and other supporting materials to someone who will either do something substantial with it, or take the content and use it as a basis for a new product - whatever they choose to do.

Look for an announcement about this sale very soon (BTW, it will be relatively inexpensive to pick up).

A couple years ago, I took a bunch of my products, put them together into a single package, and sold them at a substantial discount. It was such a great success, so I've decided to do it again.

I'll likely never take Seth Godin's approach of posting something daily, but my intention is to 'ramp things up' considerably (at least once a week, maybe more).

I'll be trying some different ideas (with a heavy focus on giving you value), but if you have any ideas about what you'd like to see from me, please leave some feedback below.

What Now?

So, what does this all mean, and why am I sharing it with you?

Well, as I mentioned at the beginning of this post, things have been a bit quiet around here the last few months - I wanted to let you know that I was still here, and hard at work (in case you were curious).

This Video Is Awesome - Marketing By Sharing

I was going to talk about The Day Launcher System today (which I announced a couple days ago), and share a couple more tidbits about how it works, but then I saw the following video, which instantly changed my entire thinking process of how I'm going to share this system with you.
